Renewable Energy Seminar Explores Green Hydrogen Generation
The recent Renewable Energy Seminar, hosted by the Centre of Renewable Energy at IIT Palakkad and led by Prof. G Ranga Rao on 20 October 2023 delved into the topic of "Photochemical and ThermoChemical Methods for Green Hydrogen Generation.” The seminar underlined the critical importance of green hydrogen as a renewable energy source, aiming to reduce the extensive use of fossil fuels and address associated environmental concerns.
In Prof. G Ranga Rao's power-packed session, the key highlight was the comprehensive exploration of thermochemical methods for green hydrogen generation. Attendees gained insights into the intricate process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through solid-steam reactions at high temperatures, approximately 1000°C. The ingenious utilization of oxygen vacancies created during the pre-reduction of ceramic materials demonstrated the potential for producing green hydrogen.
Moreover, the seminar showcased the successful thermochemical production of green hydrogen using ferrous scrap materials, facilitated by a home-built thermochemical reactor. Prof. G Ranga Rao generously shared valuable insights and experiences gained during the pursuit of this research.
