Sustainable Sanitation: Workshop on Biosolids Planning and Management

The Global Sanitation Center of Excellence (GSCOE) of IIT Palakkad in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and International Water Association - India (IWA-India) successfully organized a One day National Workshop on “Sustainable Sanitation: Focus on Biosolids Planning and Management” on 28th February 2025 at the Juniper Hall of India Habitat Center, New Delhi.

 

The workshop intended to foster in-depth discussions and brainstorming with renowned experts, policymakers, senior government officials, and key stakeholders actively engaged in the domain of biosolids and sustainable sanitation at the national level. The key feature of the event was also the release of the “Compendium on Biosolids Management: Way Ahead for India” which is a technical guideline compiled by GSCOE with inputs from various experts and stakeholders working in the area. The compendium was released by Dr. M. Mohanty, Adviser/Scientist ‘G’ - Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India in the august presence of other dignitaries including Dr. V. K. Chaurasia, Joint Adviser – CPHEEO, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Dr. Debolina Kundu, Director, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Ms. Sakshi Gudwani, India Lead -WSH, Gates Foundation, Dr. Nupur Bahadur, Associate Director, NMCG-TERI CoE on Water Reuse, Environment and Waste Management Division and Chair of IWA-India., among others. 

 

 Dr. Praveena Gangadharan, Project Director of GSCOE, gave a brief overview of the activities of GSCOE and reassured the center’s commitment to further streamlining the process of standardization for the effective reuse of Biosolids. About Fifty-six invited dignitaries, including Government officials, practitioners and technical experts across the county in the WaSH domain attended the workshop. The organizing team from GSCOE of IIT Palakkad included Dr. Devasena, (Chief Technical Officer), Dr. Sunitha K Nayar, (Chief OperatingOfficer), Dr. Praveen. G (Project Manager), Dr. Guruprasad Talekar and Dr Sudeeptha Girijan (Project Scientists).
