Response of basophils, one of the rare innate immune cells, to SARS-CoV-2: Despite being one of the important regulators of immune response and mediators of respiratory pathologies, the cross-talk between SARS-COV-2 and basophils has not yet been investigated. Prof. Jagadeesh Bayry and his collaborators now report that SARS-COV-2 induces cytokine responses in basophils that may help in mounting protective antibody responses to the virus. While interaction of SARS-COV-2 with other innate cells like monocytes, macrophages and neutrophils leads to pathogenic responses, the current report highlights a potentially beneficial response.
