Prof. Jagadeesh Bayry, Department of Biological Sciences and Engineering, IIT Palakkad, and his collaborators from France, Germany, Italy and Portugal have published an article in "Nature Communications." In this article, the researchers have provided a novel insight on the role of soluble innate humoral factors like pentraxin 3, surfactant protein D and complement proteins in the protection against invading microbes. By using a fungus Aspergillus fumigatus as a model, they have reported that interaction between soluble innate humoral factors differentially regulates the recognition of Aspergillus fumigatus depending on its life cycle and subsequent immune response mediated by neutrophils and macrophages. Their data also provide an indicator on the potential use of pentraxin 3 as a biomarker for the pathological conditions caused by Aspergillus fumigatus like invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis.
