Safety First: IIT Palakkad Hosts Second Chemistry Safety Workshop
IIT Palakkad hosted its second Chemistry Safety Workshop on March 20, 2024, emphasizing the critical importance of safety protocols in laboratory settings. Led by Dr. Mintu Porel, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, along with her team comprising Mr. Harikrishnan, Ms. Jiji, Ms. Sukanya, Ms. Priya, and Ms. Roshini, the workshop drew around a hundred participants, including MSc students, research scholars, technical staff, and project staff from various departments across the campus.
Dr. Sushabhan Sadhukhan, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, delivered an engaging lecture titled "Lab Safety Is Not an Option, but a Commitment," paving discussions on laboratory safety practices. Following the lecture, two technical demonstration sessions named "Safety Rolling" and "Drill Time" were conducted with the support of technical and CIF Staff. Proper utilization of spill kits, first aid kits, gas cylinders, fume hoods, and safety equipment was demonstrated.
The day culminated with a written test to evaluate participants' understanding of safety protocols. Dr. Dinesh Jagadeesan, Head of the Chemistry Department, delivered the closing remarks, acknowledging the commitment of all participants to ensure lab safety. Certificates were awarded to participants upon successful completion of the tests by the faculty members.
