IIT-PKD makes a mark in Biomedical Imaging

Mon, 4th Apr, 2022 - 12:00 am

Mr. Harikrishnan Pisharody, a part-time student of Dr Mahesh R Panicker has been appreciated for his research contribution at the  IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2022. His paper titled "Extending The Capability Of Linear Array Ultrasound Probe To Concave Array Using Low-Cost Acoustic Lens For High Frame Rate Focused Imaging" was shortlisted for  the best paper award at ISBI.

ISBI is the flagship conference of IEEE in the area of Biomedical Imaging attended by ~800 attendees from around the world.

Though Hari couldn't win the award, it is noteworthy that:

  • The acceptance rate for oral presentation was only 13% and there were four reviews (double blinded review) out of which Hari's paper had three strong accepts and one weak accept. This was specifically mentioned during the award ceremony during the description of the work.
  • The awards committee consisted of top experts in the field such as Prof. Jefrey A Fessler from University of Michigan, Prof. Marleen de Bruijne from University of Copenhagen and Prof. Alejandro F Frangi from University of Leeds.
  • Hari has already filed a patent related to the paper and was appreciated by industry (GE Healthcare and Siemens Healthineers) as part of the conference.

Hari, even as a part time student was able to achieve this feat, and the Institute is particularly appreciative of his exemplary effort. The student and his supervisor also placed on record their appreciation for  facilities provided by the Center for Computational Imaging at IIT Palakkad that made this possible. The Institute community celebrates this achievement.
