Wed, 19th Jul, 2023 - 02:30 pm

The month-long residential skill training program at IIT Palakkad for 20 selected students from Mele Aanavyi Ooru in Attapadi has successfully concluded today. The students actively participated in vocational training modules focused on computer and networking, electrical work, and mechanical tasks. During the closing ceremony, Professor A. Seshadri Sekhar, Director of IIT Palakkad, presented certificates to students on successful completion the training.

Prof. Sekhar expressed that the next step would be organizing an advanced level training program for these students. He encouraged the participants to inspire their friends and other youth from neighboring villages to join this commendable initiative. Thanks to the training, the students now possess the confidence to operate a computer and have their own valid email IDs, instead of relying on email IDs created by mobile phone shopkeepers. They have acquired knowledge on sending emails and received typing lessons, among other valuable skills. The program also provided hands-on training in welding, plumbing, carpentry, and wiring.

The students eagerly embarked on a project to construct a multi-level rack for bag storage. Beginning with hollow metallic bars, they skillfully fabricated a frame, involving processes like
measurement, cutting, fitting, and welding. Once the frame was completed, the students themselves cut wooden planks to create horizontal racks and assembled everything to achieve the desired product. They put their newly acquired skills into action.

This training program has significantly impacted the aspirations and confidence of the students. Many participants overcame their inhibitions and stage fright, as demonstrated by their heartfelt singing performance at the concluding ceremony. The vocational training program aimed to equip the students with a diverse range of skills, including basic carpentry, plumbing, welding techniques, and IT proficiency. The participants had access to top-notch resources available at IIT Palakkad to ensure an optimal learning experience. Additionally, transportation and accommodation were arranged within the campus premises, allowing the students to fully immerse themselves in the training.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the program, expressing their appreciation for such initiatives that are often inaccessible to individuals residing in remote areas like Attapadi. "This was a great experience for us," remarked Unnikrishnan, one of the students. He added, "We had a lot of fun here and eagerly look forward to participating in more such initiatives. The program has left a lasting impact on the students.

Present at the event were Prof. Jagadeesh Bayry, Dean of Students, Dr. Afzaal Ahamed, Faculty co-ordinator  of the program along with other faculty members and staff . The idea for this training program originated after a visit to Attapadi by a team led by Professor A. Seshadri Sekhar, accompanied by District Collector Dr. S Chitra. By imparting practical skills to the students of Attapadi, IIT Palakkad aims to contribute to their personal growth and enhance their employability prospects.
