Title: Laser communication through the atmosphere: role of aerosols and atmospheric boundary layer dynamics

Dr. Anand Narayana Sarma received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and is now working as a postdoctoral research associate there. He holds a Bachelors degree in electronics and communication engineering and a Masters degree in the same with a specialization in optical communication, from the University of Kerala. He has received the DST INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship awarded by the Department of Science and Technology, India. His Masters thesis work on the design of a laser radar for remotely studying the suspended particles in the atmosphere (better known as aerosols) introduced him to atmospheric optical communication. He was a youth delegate from India at the United Nations Climate Change conference (COP25) held at Madrid, Spain in 2019, in the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate. While the impacts of atmospheric aerosols such as black carbon on climate change and human health are well-known, it was Dr. Anand's PhD work that unravelled a hitherto unknown role of aerosols in modulating the atmospheric refractive index fluctuations and thereby the performance of terrestrial as well as satellite-to-Earth Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication links. His research works have been published in the form of several peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings. He has keen interest in outreach activities and has delivered numerous lectures and hands-on tutorial sessions on atmospheric radiative transfer modelling and atmospheric observations to national as well as international audience. He is an active reviewer for peer-reviewed international journals such as Applied Optics, Journal of the Optical Society of America A, IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology, Journal of the Optical Society of America B, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, Optics Express, SPIE Optical Engineering, Optical and Quantum Electronics, IEEE Access, IET Optoelectronics, and The Journal of Optics and is presently serving as a program committee member in the Imaging and Applied Optics Congress organized by the Optical Society of America.
