Mathematics in Industry: From Abstract Ideas to Real-World Problems
Abstract: Mathematics is often studied as a collection of distinct subjects—linear algebra, analysis, differential equations, probability, optimization, and numerical methods. In industry, however, these areas frequently come together while solving real-world problems. In this talk, I will discuss some of the opportunities available to mathematics students in industry and illustrate, through concrete examples, how mathematical ideas move from the classroom to practical applications. We will see how concepts such as eigenvalues and eigenvectors arise naturally in image processing and how differential equations, state estimation, and control come together in autonomous drone systems. The aim is to show how abstract mathematical thinking becomes a practical tool for modelling, prediction, decision-making, and control.
All are cordially invited.
